Inspection Checklist for Home Daycare Facilities

 Address Numbers – Shall be a minimum of 6” contrasting in color and plainly visible from the street.
 Flashlight – Located in an accessible location and working.
 Fire Extinguisher – Minimum 2A10BC with a current receipt or inspection tag. K.A.R.28-4-115.
 Smoke Detectors – One on each level and one in each room where children sleep, newer than 10
years old, as well as a log sheet showing the monthly test of the detectors. They should have a 10-
year lithium battery unless it has a hard-wired system. K.A.R.28-4-115, Fire Fact 057.
 Heating Devices – Hot water tank relief valve discharge kept within 6” of the floor. Combustibles
kept 36 inches away and properly vented. Fireplaces must have a barrier. K.S.A.31-133, Fire Fact

 Fire/Tornado Drill Log Sheet – Kept on file for evaluation by the inspector on official State form,
calendar or notebook. Shall post the exiting plan, showing two ways out. K.S.A.31-133, Fire Fact

 Copy of Fire/Life Safety Agreement – Must be posted next to license. K.S.A.31-133, Fire Fact 057.
 Egress – Every escape path including all stairways are clear of obstacles, and all doors are in proper
working order. K.S.A.31-133, Fire Fact 057.
 Locks & Obstructions – Every required exit door and window can be easily opened from the inside
at all times when the facility is operating. Bathroom doors shall have an accessible key to open the
door from the exterior if needed. K.A.R.28-4-115.
 Fuses & Breakers – Fill empty spaces with approved filler plates and cover. Breaker panels need to
be accessible and all circuits clearly marked.
 Cover Plates – Electrical outlets on floor level need safety plugs. K.A.R.28-4-115.
 Dryer Vents – Dryer vents shall be constructed of metal and have a smooth interior finish. 06-IMC
504.6.
 Basements – All basement rooms approved for daycare shall have two approved exits. One of these
exits can either be a walk-out door or an approved escape window measuring 5.7 square feet or 821
square inches accessible/open space and the bottom sill height not more than 44 inches from the

 Second Floor – All second floor rooms approved for daycare shall have approved windows
measuring 5.7 square feet or 821 square inches of accessible/open space and the bottom sill height
not more than 44 inches from the floor. K.S.A.31-133, Fire Fact 057.
