Histology
1. Name the four types of tissues:
epithelial
connective
muscle
nervous
2. Define the following terms and give one example where each type of epithelial tissue
would be found in the body
simple:
single layer; all cells attach to basement membrane. Kidney Tubules
stratified:
more than one layer; only one layer attaches to membrane. Epidermis
pseudostratified:
really a single layer that looks like more; Trachea or Larynx
transitional:
many layers with many cell forms; stretches. Ureter
3. What type of tissue makes up each of the following:
kidney tubules:
simple cuboidal
epidermis:
stratified squamous
dermis:
dense irregular connective tissue
liver:
glandular epithelium
pancreas
glandular epithelium
ureter :
transitional (inner lining only)
bowman’s capsule :
simple squamous
alveolar wall :
simple squamous
adam’s apple:
hyaline cartilage
tendon:
dense regular connective tissue
4. What is the difference between hyaline cartilage and elastic cartilage? Where are each
found? What does the word “elastic” mean?
Hyaline cartilage is less dense without the yellow fibers present in elastic cartilage.
Hyaline cartilage is found in bone ends, tip of nose, between ribs and sternum and the
trachea. Elastic cartilage is found in ears, part of the larynx, and the epiglottis.
Elastic means that something can stretch but regains it shape.
5. Where are the Islets of Langerhans?
Pancreas

Liver
7. What is the physiological unit of the kidney?
Nephron
8. What is the basic unit of compact bone?
Osteon
9. Name two things that might be found in lacunae?
Chondrocytes and osteocytes
10. Starting at the basement membrane, list the layers of the epidermis:
