Lab # _____
Name:_____________________________________________Date:________________Period:_____
Paper Airplane Design:
Range and Duration of Flight
Problems:
1. Design and build a paper airplane that will fly the greatest distance. (range)
2. Design and build a paper airplane that will stay in the air the greatest amount of
time. (duration)
Materials:
scrap paper for practice 2 sheets of letter size paper for final construction 1 paper clip
small amount of tape
Procedure:
1. Using any resource available, research paper airplane designs to solve the two
separate problems of range and duration.
2. Construct two separate airplanes: one each for range and duration according to your
plans.
3. Test your airplanes for desired flight characteristics and make adjustments if needed.
4. Go to the designated area for the final competition.
Rules for the Competition:
1. You will be allowed one toss for range and one toss for duration.
2. Range will be the final displacement from the starting line regardless of whether the airplane hits an
obstruction.
3. Duration will be determined from when the airplane is released until any part of the airplane touches
the floor or stops moving. If the airplane bounces off a wall or any other obstacle, time will continue
until it touches the floor or stops moving.
Summary:
Your report for this lab must include:
1. Sketches and/or photos of your two airplanes.
2. The data for your final tosses.
3. A brief discussion of where you found your designs (give credit where credit is due!), why you chose
your designs, what problems you encountered, and how you solved the problems.
4. Extra credit will be given for any video clips used to support your discussion.
