Third Grade Summer Reading and Book Project
Over the summer, students will choose and create a cereal book project at home. Students will
decorate a real cereal box with illustrations and information related to the fiction book and nonfiction
book and/or article using the directions below.
Fiction books (one of these books MUST be chosen)
 Midnight on the Moon
 Afternoon on the Amazon
 Twister on Tuesday
Nonfiction book and/or article – Please choose wither a book or an article from a magazine or
newspaper relating to your fiction book.
Example: If you choose Twister on Tuesday, please choose a nonfiction book or an article related to
twisters or other terrible storms.
YOUR BOOK PROJECT IS DUE THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL!
Front of the box: Use a piece of white or light colored paper to cover the front of your box. (You will
probably want to create the cover before gluing it on your box.) INCLUDE the title, author and an
illustration. At the bottom portion of the box, write a summary that describes the main problem and
the solution of the book.
Right side of the box: Make a list of ingredients that includes the story elements characters and
setting. Under the heading “ingredients,” list the main characters and write a sentence about each.
Then describe the setting. You can use the included template for this or make your own… make sure
to use light colored paper.
Back of the box: (Nonfiction book or article): Cover the back the same as the front of the box. Include
the title and author at the top. Under the title write what the main topic of the book/article was
about. In the middle of the box write 3 new facts you learned about the topic.
Left side of the box: List any new vocabulary words you learned (no need to write definitions, they
should be able to explain). Under your new words write a question that you still have about the topic.
Lastly, write a book recommendation. Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why
not?
