the use of close reading strategies and textual evidence to support analysis and inferences drawn
from the text.
• Definition of key concept from The Crucible.
• Rhetorical analysis essay analyzing how language creates meaning in The Great Gatsby
and Of Mice and Men.
• Synthesis essay analyzing a central topic from In Cold Blood.
• Research paper on a common obstacle to achieving the American Dream using literature
and outside sources.
• Poetry analysis of “Harlem.”
• Poetry analysis of “Hope is the thing with feathers.”
• Extended response analyzing a primary source visual such as a poster or painting.
Performance:
Students will deliver a persuasive speech offering a solution to a problem they see as affecting
their peer group.

Midyear & Final Exams: Midyear and Final Exams will be given. These exams count as 10%
of the respective semester grade. The average of the first and second quarter grades will count
90% in determining the first semester average. Similarly, the second semester average will
include the average of third and fourth quarter grades at 90% and final exam at 10%. The
average for the entire year will be the average of both semesters.
