Your task is to create a Pedigree poster. You may use three generations of your own family or you may use the family
that is described below in section B. Use the rules for making a pedigree chart that we’ve outlined in class. These rules
are also outlined in section B. Your poster should be made from standard poster board, and should be neat and easy to

Section A: Use your own family!
Create a pedigree with three generations of your own family. You may look at the rules for setting up a pedigree in
section B.
Check off the following steps as you complete them.
____Use circles for females and squares for males. Don’t forget to connect them with marriage lines or offspring lines
(see section B).
____Generations should be numbered (using Roman numerals), and individuals should be numbered left to right.
____Choose a trait that you can trace through those three generations. The list of human traits is below. Shade all
individuals who are recessive for the chosen trait (you must choose a trait that is recessive in at least one individual in
your family).
____Using the guide provided, determine the genotypes of all individuals in this pedigree for the chosen trait.
GUIDE
STEP 1
Assign two recessive genes to any person on the pedigree whose symbol is shaded. Small letters are written below the
person’s symbol.
STEP 2
Assign one dominant gene to any person on the pedigree whose symbol is unshaded. A capital letter is written below the
person’s symbol.
STEP 3
Determine the second alleles for each person with the dominant phenotype. Write the entire genotype below each shape.
