Math 25 Activity 1: Intro to Projects and Primes
Mathematics is a rich subject that goes deeper than basic arithmetic.
1. Discuss with your group benefits of studying mathematics:
Did you include that students who study math learn problem solving, critical reading and thinking,
rational thought processes, abstract thinking, perseverance, focus, attention to detail, technology, and
much more? Did you mention that math students also learn various study skills such as note-taking,
organization, summary of material, review, memorization, time management, attendance, preparation,
seeking and using resources for help, and others?
2. Discuss with your group which study skills you plan to utilize in this course, including any not
previously listed that you may think of:
Let’s answer the above question by looking at one of Boise State’s general studies objectives that all
students must meet.
The Boise State Disciplinary Lens Course Rubric for Mathematics (ULO 7) describes some of the
outcomes achieved through studying mathematics that the university strives to teach all of its
graduates. Graduates from Boise State should be able to:
Apply quantitative reasoning methods to draw conclusions.
Communicate mathematical ideas.
Select appropriate strategies when problem solving.
Formulate and justify generalizations.
Use appropriate technology as a tool for problem solving.
Math 25 is a course that prepares you for future math courses that make sure you meet these
objectives. Two of the main objectives for these activities are to help students communicate
mathematical ideas and learn how to select appropriate strategies for problem solving. Other objectives
for the projects this semester include but are not limited to: practicing mathematical concepts of varying
level, deepening understanding of pre-requisite knowledge, practicing critical reading, practicing critical
thinking, problem-solving, communicating with peers about mathematical concepts, and tying multiple
mathematical skills together.
