Dichotomous Key
Purpose:
To discover a method of classification and gain practice in organizing items by their
properties and characteristics.
Procedures:
1. Pick out 1 Jelly Belly
from your cup.
2. In the chart provided, list the numbers you follow to identify the bean. (Always
start with #1.)
3. When you get to a description for the flavor of the bean, write down what you
think the flavor might be. DO NOT EAT IT!
4. Repeat each step for each Jelly Belly
until you are done.
5. Wait for me to tell you when you can eat your materials.
6. Eat one Jelly Belly
at a time to determine if you correctly identified them.
7. Write the correct flavor of Jelly Belly
next to any of those you incorrectly
identified before eating them.
8. Answer the discussion questions.
Discussion Questions:
1. What characteristic(s) did you use to determine the flavor of your samples?
2. Did you correctly identify the flavor of your Jelly Bellies ?
3. Do you think another characteristic could have been used? If so, which one? If
not, why not?
4. Was the key easy to follow? Why or why not?
5. Explain how to use an identification/dichotomous key for classifying items.
6. Do you think you could use an identification key for classifying living things?
Why or why not?
