Dear Dr. Barton:
I am writing to apply for the position of Associate Professor in the Creative Writing and Literature
department at Berryman College, posted in this week’s Chronicle of Higher Education. I hold an M.F.A. in
Fiction Writing and an M.A. in Literature from the University of Pittsburgh. My first collection of stories,
When Robert Speaks of Fish, won the Mirror Press First Book Award and will be published in September of
2015.
I have extensive experience teaching fiction writing. Since my second year as a teaching assistant, when I
earned the distinction of being the only TA selected to teach a creative writing course, I have taught at least
one fiction writing course per semester. Classes taught range from the Introductory Fiction class to upper
level workshops and the senior Independent Study in Fiction. I have also taught courses on special topics such
as Fiction and Film, Contemporary Fiction and Popular Culture, and Fan Fiction.
I have a great deal of experience teaching literature courses as well. I’m currently developing a course called
“Women Novelists Bending Time,” examining Kate Atkinson’s Life after Life, Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the
Goon Squad, and Virginia Woolf’s classic Orlando. Other courses I’ve developed recently combining my
expertise in literary studies with a keen analysis of contemporary craft include “The ‘What We Talk About’
Trope: Raymond Carver, Nathan Englander, and Beyond” and “Toni Morrison, Edwidge Danticat, and
Sherman Alexie: Telling History.”
I have presented papers and read at major conferences and received multiple awards for excellence in both
teaching and writing, including a National Endowment for the Arts grant in Fiction and residencies at Yaddo
and MacDowell. With the goal of fostering young writers and the writing community, I created and hosted
two different reading series in Pittsburgh, and served as the volunteer coordinator of a local writing
workshop for teenagers. I am passionate about teaching, writing, and the teaching of writing, and I look
forward to the opportunity to share those passions with the Berryman College community.
My CV is attached. I may be reached at 412-555-0006 or , and I am available to
interview at your convenience. I look forward to meeting you, and I thank you for the opportunity to be
considered for the post of Associate Professor.
Sincerely,
Anne Derillo
