Vocabulary Baseball
1. Divide your classroom into two teams and draw a baseball diamond on your blackboard.
2. Each team has three outs per inning (like regular baseball) and one player from each team goes at a
time.
3. You say a word, and the student has 20 seconds to define it.
4. If he defines it in five seconds, the team gets a home run; within 10 seconds, it's a triple; within 15
seconds, it's a double; and just before the time limit, it's a single.
5. If the student does not get the definition right, he's out.
6. Draw an icon for a base runner when a student gets a hit.
7. When a player gets to home plate the team scores a run. The team with the most runs at the end of
nine innings wins the game.
Hot Seat ( can be used with Word Bags)
This activity can be used as a whole-class activity or can be used as a review activity with small groups
or pairs once students are familiar with the activity's rules.
1. In this activity, one student is selected to come to the front of the class and take the "hot seat."
2. The hot seat is located a few feet in front of a chalkboard, whiteboard, or chart.
3. The student sits in a chair facing his or her classmates and with his or her back to the board or chart.
The student also should have a clear view of the class word wall.
4. The teacher or a classmate selects a word from the word wall (or from students' spelling or
vocabulary lists) and writes that word on the board or chart.
5. The student in the hot seat is unable to see the word, but it is his/her job to guess the word by asking
yes/ no questions to his classmates to determine what the word might be.
6. The student has 10 questions available until he must guess what the word is.
7. You can make this an individual contest or you can have the class separated into several teams to
add a competitive element.

Vocabulary Skits
Assist students in retaining vocabulary word meaning by giving them a visual example of each word as
it is properly used.
1. Divide students into groups.
2. Assign each group a set of vocabulary words that you are currently studying.
3. Ask each group to compose a 2 minute skit featuring their assigned words.
4. Encourage the students to create zany skits featuring humorous hijinks that will intrigue the
audience.
5. Allow the students to perform their skits for the class.
