Content and Strategies:
A. Activator:
Display a blank map of the areas of the major battles of the Civil War.
Ask students what significance such a map has. Ask them if they can
name any of the major battles of the Civil War and if they can point to
where they were located. Let them know that by the end of this lesson
they should be able to locate and label such places.
B. Body:
Hand out “Major Battles of The Civil War” directions. Have students
work with their 2 o’clock partners. In the computer lab and in partners
students will research a selected battle and create a PowerPoint slide that
will be part of a group effort presentation. Each pair will include the
following information on their slide:
1. Name of the Civil War Battle you chose.
2. Location and Dates of the battle
3. Briefly describe the battle, including leaders, course of events,
and the outcome.
4. Describe the environment of the battle. For example, was the
battle fought on land or sea? In a town or city or in a rural area?
What was the geography, climate, and weather like?
5. What factors influenced the outcome of the battle?
6. What was the significance of the battle in the war?
