LAB-Visual Tests & Experiments
Activity 1: Demonstration of the Blind Spot
1. Close your left eye. Position the dot in front of your right eye at arm’s length. Stare at the dot
and move the paper towards your face. Record the distance at which the asterisk disappears
and then reappears.
2. Close your right eye. Position the asterisk in front of the left eye at arm’s length. Stare at the
asterisk and move the paper towards your face. Record the distance at which the dot disappears
and then reappears.

Activity 2: Determining Near Point of Accommodation
1. To determine your near point of accommodation, hold your lab paper at arm’s length in front of
one eye. Slowly move the paper towards that eye until the words on the paper become
distorted. Have your lab partner measure the distance from your eye to the paper, and record
the distance below. Repeat this procedure for your other eye.

Activity 3: Testing Visual Acuity
1. Have your partner stand 20 feet from the posted Snellen eye chart and cover one eye with a
card or hand. As your partner reads each consecutive line aloud, check for accuracy. If this
individual wears glasses, give them the test twice—first with glasses off and then with glasses
on.
2. Record the number of the line with the smallest-sized letters read. If it is 20/20, the person’s
vision for that eye is normal. If it is 20/40, or any ratio with a value less than one, he or she
has less than the normal visual acuity. (Such an individual is myopic.) If the visual acuity
ratio is greater than 1, vision is better than normal. Give your partner the number of the line
corresponding to the smallest letters read, to record on the data table.
3. Repeat the process for the other eye.
4. Have your partner test and record your visual acuity.
