FETAL MOVEMENT COUNTING
Fetal movement suggests well-being of the fetus during the last few months of your
pregnancy. The fetus has alternating sleep and wake cycles of about 45 minutes each, so
it may not be “active” at all times.
If you have concerns about decreased fetal movement, try to do fetal movement counting
as early in the day as possible. We can address your concerns more easily during the
normal work day. However, you should do fetal movement counting whenever you are
concerned. We have a doctor on call at all times.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1.
Do the count once daily, about the same time each day, one hour after a meal, or
during your baby’s usual active time. Count fetal movement while resting on
your side, with no distractions (no TV, radio, telephone conversations).
2.
Once you feel 10 movements, you may stop counting. Movements include any
kick (even very slight), flutter, swish, roll, etc. Your provider may ask you to keep
a daily log of the time to feel fetal movement (see chart below).
3.
If 10 movements are not felt by 2-hours from when you start counting, call the
office to speak with the medical assistant. We may have you come to the office or
go to birthplace for a non-stress test (monitoring the fetal heart rate activity on a
special machine).
