IV infusion drip rates
Basic IV infusion rates:
Rate desired: _____ mL/hr
Tubing gtt size: ____gtt / mL (typically 60-10-15)
Formula:
(Rate x tubing gtt size) ÷ 60 min = ____gtt / minute
(___ x ___ ) ÷ 60 = ______ gtt / minute
For SLOWER infusions:
Calculate the number of seconds BETWEEN drops
Formula:
60 (min/hr) ÷___gtt / minute = ___# of seconds BETWEEN drops
Continuous IV drug administration rates:
Determine the RATE of administration
Info you will need:
Bag volume:
________ mL
Amount of drug in bag: ________ mg
Dose desired:
________ mg/min
Formula:
(Bag volume x 60 x dose in mg/min ) ÷ ( amount of drug in bag in mg ) = rate n mL/hr
( ___mL x 60 x ___mg/minute) ÷ ( ___mg ) = ____mL/hr
E.g. Lidocaine: 2000mg (2gm) in 250mL to run at 2mg/min
( 250 mL x 60 x 2 mg/minute) ÷ ( 2000 mg ) = 15 mL/hr
Weight-based IV administration – ONLY FOR DRUGS DOSED IN MCG/KG/MIN:
ie. Dopamine or Epinephrine
Determine the RATE of administration
Bag volume:
_______ mL
Amount of drug in bag: _______mg
Weight:
_______kg
Dose desired:
_______mcg / kg / min
Formula:
(Bag volume x weight kg x 60 (tubing gtt size) x dose ) ÷ ( amount of drug in bag x 1000 ) = rate in mL/hr
( ___mL x ___ kg x 60 x ____ mcg/kg/min) ÷ ( ____ mg x 1000) = ___ mL/hr
REMINDER: Do the multiplication inside the parentheses first!
( ______ ) ÷ ( ______ ) = _____ mL/ hr
A word of caution – these rates tend to be quite slow and should be used only with microdrip tubing which is 60 gtts per mL.
