How Sedimentary Rock Is Formed
Name___________________________Class___
For thousands, even millions of years, little pieces of our earth have
been eroded--broken down and worn away by wind and water and
turned into sediments. These sediments, or little bits of earth, are
washed downstream where they settle to the bottom of the rivers,
lakes, and oceans. Layer after layer of sediment is deposited on top of
each new layer. These layers are pressed down more and more through
time, until the bottom layers slowly turn into rock.
Conglomerate rocks are sedimentary rocks.
Conglomerate Rocks
They are made up of large sediments like sand
and pebbles. The sediment is so large that
pressure alone cannot hold the rock together; it
is also cemented together with dissolved
minerals.
Shale rock is a type of layered sedimentary
rock formed from clay that is compacted
together by pressure. They are used to make

bricks and other material that is fired in a
kiln.
Rock Facts
Sedimentary rocks are made from sediments (small pieces of other rocks- pebbles, sand, clay).
Rocks are always being broken into sediments and worn away (eroded) by wind and water.
The sediments flow along in rivers and streams or blow over the land and settle in a new
place.
As they settle, they pile up and form layers.
After long periods of time, the pieces become pressed together and form solid rock called
sedimentary rock.
Sedimentary rocks are usually formed in water and are found all over the world.
Many fossils are found in sedimentary rock.
