Setting goals using the SMART method
Specific: describe as specifically as possible where employee improvement is required. Specific examples to aid development and give clear expectations.
Measurable: describe how the improvement and results will be measured. Use specific, clear and measurable standards.
Agreed: goals, deadlines and training are effective motivation. The employee may want to work towards certain goals and have ideas for their development in addition to
the business focus, be proactive and suggest ideas. Managers should make improvement goals clear and ensure that the employee acknowledges and understands these.
Realistic: keep all deadlines, goals and areas for improvement realistic.
Time Limited: discuss and define the time frames required to complete each task and overall improvement. If the improvement is ongoing, define (where possible) time
frames for specific tasks or sub-components of the goal. If providing training, ensure that workload is covered and that reasonable time is allocated within the employees
work-day to sufficiently complete.
