We are Composers!!!
Please choose one (1) of the following options for your composition project:
1) Jingle/Commercial
Description: A song advertising a product or service.
Steps
o Design a product – What is it called? What is its purpose? Why should people purchase
your product/service? Create a slogan for your product/service.
o Using this information, write lyrics for your jingle. Because you are trying to sell something
you want to be persuasive!
o Decide on instrumentation. What sounds will accompany your jingle? Will the lyrics be
sung or spoken? Will there be music in the background? Will there be sound effects?
What instruments do you need?
o Using musical notation of your choice create a rough copy.
o Create a good copy of your jingle/commercial.
o Perform your composition.
2) Verse‐Chorus Form Song
Description: A song in verse‐chorus form with lyrics on a topic of your choice.
Steps
o Choose a topic for your song. Begin lyric writing. Start with the chorus and proceed to the
verses.
o Different composers work in different ways. Some start with words and then do the
melody later. Others write both at the same time. You may decide which style best suits
you. When writing down the melody you hear use techniques from the percussion
composition (ie. pictures, symbols, high and low lines). Use anything that will illustrate the
melody and help you remember it. If you are comfortable working with staff paper you
may use that too.
o Decide on instrumentation. Will there be instruments accompanying your song or will it be
acapella? If there are instruments, which ones will you choose? What will these
instruments be playing?
o Using musical notation of your choice create a rough copy.
o Create a good copy of your song.
o Perform your composition.
