Plant Germination and Growth Lab Report
The purpose of this lab was to study factors that affect seed germination, and later plant growth and
development.
For the lab report please follow the format as set below:
Introduction: since we covered a number of topics, you should include the following in your introduction –
germination factors for seeds, what is normal, and what are significant factors; general plant growth and
development after germination, including nutrients and hormones necessary for that process. The
introduction should take about 2 paragraphs of background information, and should include at least 3
citations from your research to support the premises presented. (20 pts)
Part 1: Seed germination (50 pts)
1. Problem statement: What factor has the most impact on germination of bean/ pea seeds?
2. Identify all of the variables for seed germination. Lastly identify which you chose to test and why.
3. Hypothesis statement – write your hypothesis statement clearly, be sure to address the variables and intentions
of the testing process for your specimen.
4. Procedure: All groups will start seed sets, and germinate in the same set up: those materials will consist of a
petri dish and wet paper towel; tape the petri dish inverted so seeds stay put for observation. Each table group
then follows their own protocol based on your research of the variable topics: dark vs light, normal diurnal vs all
light, etc. be sure to label your dish, and note its location in the classroom for the specified variable.
5. Class data from germination process. – include your data chart for the class with all info up to date, and dates/
days of the experiment.
6. Summarize/ analyze which variables seemed to have the most impact on seed germination when compared to
the control. This is the place to include your specific research on the germination topic pertinent to your tested
variable. Also worth noting, how type of plant or climate/ geology also play into the process for certain plant
species. Compare your plant both to the control, and one other tested variable in class.
Part II – Plant growth and development, note procedural plan as it has changed or remained the same for your
specimens. (10 pts)
1. Transfer seeds to soil medium and continue to treat with same variable for another week.
2. Record data still looking for epicotyl, cotyledons, and stem growth. This is the place to include the new growth
data charts, with up to date information, and days/dates.
3. Add any more information/Research regarding how growth and development variables that were being tested
should affect your plants. This is a good place for a revised or alternative hypothesis regarding growth and
development based on your testing variable.
Part III – treatment with nutrition/ hormones – (50 pts)
1. Problem statement: Based on your research/ notes, choose 1 treatment of nutrition or hormones and observe
impact on growth and development.
2. Write a hypothesis statement of variables and expectation for the outcome in the next week ½.
3. Include new procedural information particularly about location and treatment dosages, watering frequency, etc.
4. Include last set of data charts for growth and changes after treatments.
5. Summarize this portion of the lab project, be sure to reference notes and other research information.
