Community service is a graduation requirement for all Lake Orion Baptist School students. The integration of
community service into the curriculum helps accomplish several goals that extend beyond the classroom.
Students have the opportunity to impact their neighbors and community by applying the biblical principles of
servant-leadership. By using the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom in real-life situations, students
grow in their ability to interact with individuals and organizations within the community. Seeking to provide
service to others helps students learn to be selfless and to effectively shine the light of the gospel to a dark
world.
Students in grades 9-12 will be required to have a minimum of 10 hours of community service per year or
partial year that they attend Lake Orion Baptist School. Any hours over and above the requirement in any
given year may not be transferred to the following school year. Summer service hours may be applied to either
the previous or upcoming school year.

Because most LOBS students already participate in regularly scheduled ministry opportunities within the
local church (children’s church, choir/orchestra, nursery, etc.), students must complete their community
service hours in ways that place an emphasis on impacting the community. Church-sponsored activities
such as Adopt-a-Road clean up, food banks, and blood drives would qualify as community service.
Students may not work for a business to earn community service hours.
Students may not volunteer for family members for hours.
Students may assist senior citizens, disabled individuals, or special needs persons other than relatives.
Student’s volunteer hours must benefit the community, not a business.
Students may volunteer at non-profit clubs and organizations or for not-for-profit events. Students must
keep in mind that “non-profit” does not simply mean “not getting paid.” Working at a business and not
getting paid is not acceptable for community service hours.
Students may not submit hours for service done for another organization’s requirement.
Students who volunteer during the summer following their 8
grade year may apply the hours toward the
th
high school graduation requirement.
Students are not limited in the number of hours served per site; however, service hours must be
completed from at least 3-5 different sites.
Incomplete Community Service forms will not be accepted.

a predetermined period of time. For example, every Tuesday from 4:00-6:00pm.

two-day event to benefit the community, such as a fair for kids, a walk for charity, or a blood drive.
o Student-Developed Service Projects: A student-generated idea to help a specific organization or
