Step-by-step of the activity: You can start off explaining the meaning of the lanterns and how some Asian countries use them to celebrate festivals
such as the Moon Festivals or New Years. If possible some images or videos of these celebrations with the lanterns would be helpful to give kids a
mental image and deeper understanding.
To start off, kids should choose 2 construction papers of 2 different colors they want their lantern to be. One for the outside and one for the inside of
the lantern. Starting with the paper that will be on the outside, fold it in half, short end to short end (hamburger style). Using a ruler, draw
lines from the folded edge to about 1 inch from the opposite edge of the folded paper. The closer the lines are, the fuller the lantern will
be, but it will be harder for the kids to cut them. They can then unfold and decorate the opposite side (optional).
Next they will begin to cut along the lines with the; make sure they do not to cut all the way to the edge. Also, make sure the lines start
on the folded side, not the open edge. Open up the cut paper, and lay perpendicular on top a second piece of paper. Line up the edges
and tape/staple the two pieces together. This part may require help: one person to hold down the papers and one to tape or staple the
two sheets together. They can cut off any excess paper from the inside color paper.
Roll up the two papers to form a tube and tape (or staple) both ends. The strips should pop out and they can fluff out the lantern. Using
a hole punch or scissors, punch 2 holes on the one end of the tube. Tie string or ribbon through the holes.
Tip: Sit the lanterns on a table and place a flashlight or battery operated candle to light it up or hang the lantern from a chopstick or any
stick so they can have their own procession!
