Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Specialized License Information
Trapping License
A state trapping license allows an individual to trap fur-bearing animals throughout the state. Traps may not be
placed on private property without permission as described in Revised code of Washington 77.65.450. Trapping
licenses expire on April 1st following the date of issue. First time trapper licenses must submit a “trapper’s
certificate” or pass an examination to establish that the applicant has the requisite knowledge. Only those
trappers who submit their previous year’s trapper report no later than April 10th of each year will be allowed to
renew their license.
Game Farm License
Person’s who held a game farm license prior to January 1, 1992 may continue to possess, propagate, sell, and
transfer wildlife lawfully possessed by virtue of the license issued by the department. Transfers of wildlife other
than the following are restricted according to Washington Administrative Code 232-12-027(1). Game farms
licensed on or after January 1, 1992 may purchase, possess, propagate, sell or transfer the following birds:
pheasant of the genus Phasianius; gray partridge of the genus Perdix; chukar partridge of genus Alectoris; quail
of the genus Lophorthyz Colinus, Callipepia, and Oreotyx; and water fowl of the family Anatidae. Applicants
must comply with criteria stated in the Washington Administrative Code.
Taxidermist
A taxidermy license allows the holder to practice taxidermy for profit in Washington state. Records of wildlife
received are required and must be maintained at the place of business on forms provided by the department or
pre-numbered forms belonging to the dealer.
Fur Dealer
A fur dealer license allows the holder to purchase, receive, or resell raw furs for profit in Washington state.
Records of wildlife received are required and must be maintained at the place of business on forms provided by
the department or pre-numbered forms belonging to the dealer.
