EDITING SHEET FOR THE RESEARCH PAPER
Author’s Name _____________________
Reviewer’s Name ___________________________
A. Use of Sources:
1. Does the works cited page have the required number of sources?
2. What types of sources are they? List the number of the following: interviews, printed
books, periodicals, newspapers, and online resources.
3. How many times did the author document sources (use parenthetical references) within
the paper?
4. Are enough resources cited in the paper to make it a research paper instead of a personal
essay?
5. Is all the paraphrased information documented?
6. Is the correct format followed in listing the sources in the Works Cited and Works
Consulted?
B. Mechanics:
1. Are all book, magazine, and play titles italicized?
2. Are quotation marks around magazine or internet article titles?
3. Circle spelling errors. Be sure to doublecheck for homophones (to/too/two,
their/there/they’re, its/it’s, than/then, affect/effect).
4. Check for commas. Did the author use a comma between two sentences joined by and,
but, or, or nor? Did he or she use commas after introductory phrases and clauses?
5. Are all contractions spelled out?
6. Is “who” or “whom” used when referring to people (instead of “that”)?
7. Check for fragments or run-ons. Write frag or R-O in the margin next to any you find.
8. Proofread for other “Common Writing Problems.” To help you do so, in Microsoft Word,
complete a search for the following words so you can correct any associated errors:
thing/things
a lot/lots
you/your
get/got/gotten
hopefully
every day/everyday
this/that (be sure to answer the question “this what?”)
amount/number
done/finished
less/fewer
