EGG CUP
Note: The drawings shown here are not to scale. Your chucks and your wood may
all be slightly, or considerably, different in size.
Before starting to make your egg cup you should make an egg cup template - see
page 3 of this project for a scale plan of this template.
For the egg cup u
se a block 50 x 50 x 100mm
(2 x 2 x 4 inches)
to make the
egg cup size to match the template shown. Mount this in a scroll chuck. The
grain should be lengthwise - running between head and tail of the lathe. After
mounting, thin the block down to almost the desired outside diameter for the cup.
Hollow the cup to exactly
the width and depth of
the template. The curve

wide
template curve, but not
narrower. Sand the
inside.
Shape the outside of the cup. The wall
thickness does not need to be even or
thin,
and may
be thicker at the bottom
of the cup.
Cut the foot to its finished diameter. Be
generous with foot size for the egg cup
to be stable on the table or plate. Cut
the stem down to size -
this is better if it is
reasonably thick.
Start of the parting off
cut
. Sand and finish
all
surfaces of the egg cup.
Part off and hand finish
the bottom.
