Key terms
Twitter Feed: The running list of tweets by users you follow.
RT: A retweet—or RT—is when you share the tweet of one user with all of your Twitter followers.
MT: A modified retweet—or MT—is a tweet that’s been modified or edited in some way.
Reply: A direct response to a specific user, which begins with their username.
DM: A direct message—or DM is a private message directed to a user. You can only direct
message someone you follow. You can preface your tweet with DM @GatesEd, for example, to
send a direct message.
Follower: A follower is a user that you follow on Twitter. Following is not necessarily a two-way
street. You can follow users and they may or may not choose to follow you.
Hashtag: A hashtag (#) is a word or phrase preceded by a “#.” Hashtags (#) help you focus on
tweets around a specific topic. You can add a hashtag to any tweet.
Top five #hashtag tips
• The shorter, the better (use only one or two words, like #commoncore)
• If you use an abbreviation, makes sure it’s common (#STEM, for example)
• Do not use hard to spell words
• Try to use existing hashtags to participate in established conversations
• The narrower the focus, the better (#elemteachers, instead of #teachers)
