Foundation Paper-Pieced Boat Block
(8 ½” x 8 ½” unfinished)
1. Turn pattern over and trace reverse image to non-shiny side of freezer paper. Include numbers and colors.
Freezer-paper pattern with sewing lines will be on back of block.
When printing from computer, make sure
the size of the pattern without seam allowance is 8” x 8“.
(Enlarge pattern on copier, if necessary.)
2. Cut fabric for each part of block, using measurements on pattern – sky, boat, sail, mast, and water.
Measurements are generous and include seam allowance.
3. Using 1.5 stitch length, sew sections in numerical order, leaving ¼” seam allowance on inside edges and
½” seam allowance on outer edges of block. (Extra seam allowance on outside edges will make it easier to
square completed block.)
4. Trim completed block to 8 ½” x 8 ½” and keep paper on back until block is sewn into its final place.
Paper will keep bias edges from stretching. Unfinished block must be 8 ½” x 8 ½”.
Note: Paper-piecing is one method to construct block. Pattern can be used to make templates by adding
¼” seam allowance around all pattern edges and piecing block with scant ¼” seams.
