Description:

Your goal is to persuade the audience that something is or is not (fact) regarding an aspect of your chosen social

issue. You will need to have served for a minimum of FOUR hours (two visits) prior to giving the speech. This

speech will serve as the information gathering speech for the semester. It is important that you be thorough in your

research yet discerning in your information selection (need to know vs. nice to know).

Requirements:

Time: 5 minutes; 2 minutes Question and Answer

Speaking Notes: one piece of paper (one side, key word only)

Lectern: not allowed (place speaking notes next to you)

Presentational Aids: PowerPoint is required (no more than 3 slides, + title slide). An alternate symbol system (not

all words) is expected.

Content: 2 main points that support your persuasive proposition of fact (thesis)

Support Material: a MINIMUM of 4 different, credible sources [for example: one website, one book, one

newspaper article, and one interview] must be ORALLY cited in the body of the speech; a reference list in APA

style should be included in your formal outline [general dictionaries, Wikipedia, Encyclopedia Britannica, etc. are

unacceptable for this speech]

Medium/Audience: minimum of 10 people, 16-years-old+ (audience must be panned before and after speech) ;

Continuous recording uploaded on Kaltura. [Cutting and pasting the speech together is an automatic revision.]
