Science Fair Research Paper
Now that you have finalized your question, the next step in preparing to do your science experiment is
to write a research paper about the topic you have selected.

On this date you will need to turn in a list of research sources in the form of a works cited page. I expect at least three
sources cited. You should include every source you use. Sources should be in MLA format. You may see the “works cited
examples” page for examples.
The research portion will also be due on this date. The information below gives you detailed instructions on what is
expected. You must follow the exact format to receive full points for this portion of your science fair project.
REMEMBER: You will not receive any credit on any other portion of the project until this is
completed!!! Turn this in on time!
Background and Research Paper Information
Format (10 pts.)
• 1 ½ -2 pages of good information, well written in student’s own words
• typed and double spaced
• one-inch margins, 12 pt font (Times New Roman font only)
• Cite references if you use exact quotes.
• ***Works Cited, in MLA format must be attached on separate sheet of paper
Format of the paper:
Introduction (min ¼ page) 25 pts.
~State the question you will attempt to answer.
~Why did you select this problem?
~Why is this useful/interesting/important to investigate? (This is very important!)
Core Science Knowledge (min ½ page) 25 pts.
~Include core scientific information you need as background to understand the topic
~information should relate directly to the experiment
Previous research in the field (min ¼ page) 5 pts.
~What has been done by others in this field or related topic? (just give general info)
Techniques and resources (min ¼ page) 25 pts.
~Write a synopsis (summary) of your experiment. Give a paragraph or two on what you will do for
your experiment. Think: If you were to describe what you will do to a friend, what would you say?
~Describe sources you may need or resources you may use. (books, videos, previous trials)
Conclusion ¼ page) 10 pts.
~A summary of key points that were made in the above sections. Include relevance, key background
info, and an ending.
*Please make this easy to add on to your final paper. You will turn in one hard copy and you should
keep one as a soft copy for future use. You will not be receiving your papers back when you receive
your grade.
