Building Verbs Basic Explanation:
Compound verb phrases use 2 verbs together. The first verb is the
helping (or building) verb. The second is an infinitive. An infinitive is
the “name of the verb” or unconjugated form of the verb. In
English, infinitives always starts with “to” (to work, to go, to sing, to
fly, etc.) In Spanish, infinitives end with “-ar”, ‘-er”, or “-ir”
(hablar, estudiar, comer, vivir, etc.) On your yellow sheet, entitled
“Verbos Esenciales para Español 2”, you have a list of 142 infinitives
that you will need to know by the end of the year. You already know
many of them. In this unit you will learn to use the helping/building
verbs from the pink sheet with the infinitives on the yellow sheet.
To form compound verbs, you will conjugate (use the form that tells
who is doing the action) the first verb (from the pink sheet) and
use the infinitive of the second verb (from the yellow sheet.)
For example:
The conjugated forms of necesitar are: (find them on the pink
sheet in the middle of the left column).
Necesito (I need)
Necesitas (you need)
Necesita (he/she/you polite need/s)
Necesitamos (we need)
Necesitan (they need)
Put any of the above forms with any of the verbs on the yellow sheets.
For example:
I need to study: Necesito estudiar
You need to read: Necesitas leer
We need to play: Necesitamos jugar
He needs to sleep: Necesita dormir
I need to go: Necesito ir
They need to explain: Necesitan explicar
They need to leave: Necesitan salir
