overloaded with new information on a topic they’re not familiar with. Traditionally,

s tudents have been given new data from which they are to write a news paper article,

which requires a different format than mos t writing. Learning and applying two new

s kills at once can be difficult.

B etter writing occurs when students are familiar with the s etting: Writing a news paper

article about an incident from a story they have read allows s tudents to focus on

news paper writing s kills with content they’re already familiar with.

Us e fac ts and details that are in the story. Assume that the reader of the

newspaper article knows nothing about what happened in the story.

Add information that’s not in the s tory but could logically have been in

the story. For example in, Where the R ed Fern G rows, there’s no

newspaper article when B illy wins the trophy. What would his grandfather

have said if a reporter had interviewed him?

C onc lude your artic le. The end of your article doesn’t have to be at the

same point the story ends. The article about B illy and his dogs winning the

trophy is the end of the article. Y our article does n’t have to mention

anything that happens later in the story.

As k why and how. As a newspaper reporter who’s familiar with the story,

you can ask specific questions for your article. As B illy is celebrating

winning the trophy, your readers might want to know how a poor farm boy

like B illy got two nice hunting dogs like Old Dan and Little Ann.
