Life Safety System Testing
Fire detection and suppression systems and other life-safety systems are incorporated
into many buildings for the purpose of protecting the occupants and the building from fire.
These systems are complex and are not foolproof. The Fire Code requires quarterly testing of
fire and life-safety systems to ensure they are working properly.
Semiannually, these tests should be performed by certified alarm technicians. The other
tests may be accomplished by building maintenance personnel. Building owners and operators
are required to maintain records of these tests. Once each year the fire department will
conduct a spot test and inspection and review the records previous tests. Records of quarterly
tests should include information such as the date of the test, the name of the person(s)
conducting the tests, problems found, date of repairs and comments section. Items from the
attached list which pertain to your building shall be included in all tests.
