Proof of Emancipation
Emancipation is the parental surrender of claim to the right to care and custody of a minor. According to the tuition law, emancipation occurs
at the age of 22 years, or upon marriage, or if: 1. The parents or legal guardians submit an affidavit surrendering any claim or right to the
care, custody, and earnings of the minor, as well as the duty to support the minor, together with the student's proof that the student can
independently meet all living expenses, including the cost of education; and 2. failure of parents or legal guardians to provide financial
support together with the student's proof that the student can independently meet all living expenses, including the cost of education. The 12-
month waiting period for establishing domicile begins only after the date of emancipation has been established by appropriate documentation.
You must complete this petition and have it notarized and submitted to Admissions and Records two weeks before you register for
classes.

1. Have your parent(s) or legal guardian complete the PARENT(S) STATEMENT FOR MINOR CLAIMING EMANCIPATION
and attach photocopies of their federal income tax returns covering the stated period of emancipation. Submit the parent’s statement
along with this Petition for Emancipation to the Tuition Classification Officer in the Admissions and Records Office.

d. List your sources of income from employment, loans, school sources, personal savings, trust funds and gifts from parents,
relatives, and friends, since your parents ceased providing financial support. *You must attach verifying proof and
documentation for each income source during the past 12 months. 1.) If your income is provided by a trust fund, attach
photocopies of legal papers setting up the trust showing the date it was established, the amounts, the purpose for which the fund was
formed, and the persons by whom any money was added to the trust fund in the past two years. 2.) If you have savings, they must be
documented by photocopies of balance statements or passbook pages covering the entire 12-month period. 3.) If employment is
used as an income source, list it in terms of yearly take-home totals (as documented by W-2 forms, statements from employers, etc.)
rather than wages per hour, per week or per month.
