Sample Letter to Teachers
Regarding Volunteer Assignment
Congratulations! The MCPS Science/AAAS Volunteer Project has been able to provide a
volunteer to assist in your science programs.
Your volunteer is ______. His/her email address is: ___________.
Shortly, you will be contacted by the project’s middle/elementary school coordinator to
introduce him/her to you and your lead teacher/principal. They will discuss ways in which
he/she can provide assistance. You may come up with a plan that allows multiple grade
levels to benefit from the expertise _______ brings or you may decide to focus on a
grade level and/or a teacher. It is important to establish regular communication, email
and/or phone, between the volunteer and teachers(s).
Volunteers are encouraged to do a little observation prior to beginning the volunteer
experience. It is important that volunteers understand the norms of the school, the
class(es), etc., before becoming a part of activities.
Please introduce ________ to your administrators and other team members.
Please ensure ___________ is aware of emergency procedures for fire drills, codes,
etc., in case any of these situations arise when he is working at your school.
As you are working with your volunteer, consider ways to support student inquiry. We
will discuss the idea of an inquiry night (more to come later) that some schools might
want to try this year. If this is something your school already does or wants to do,
_________ can support student readiness for completing inquiry projects.
Any questions can be directed to me and I will work with my counterpart, Dave Weiss of
the SSE, to ensure you and your volunteer have a positive experience that supports
students’ understanding of science.
I am glad we were able to provide a volunteer for your school!
