FAMILY FIRST APPLICANTS WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR MARRIAGE
YOU ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE AND RETURN THIS FORM PRIOR TO
YOUR IMMIGRANT VISA INTERVIEW
Please read the following instructions carefully:
Check the appropriate box on the reverse side of this sheet. If you indicate an interest in
getting married, we will determine if your priority date is current under the new category
of Family Third Preference (F3 – married son/daughter of a U.S. citizen).
• If your priority date is current, we will inform you in writing that you may proceed with
the marriage. You will be required to submit your marriage certificate, your spouse’s
birth certificate and any divorce decrees for you or your spouse. At that time, your case
will be upgraded to the Family Third Preference category (F3) and new visa numbers
will be requested from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. It will
take approximately three to four months to reschedule you for a new appointment after
you have submitted the required documents.
• If your priority date is not current under the F3 category, the embassy will inform you in
writing.
• Once married, you have two options: (1) your spouse may accompany you to the United
States, or (2) your spouse may follow-to-join at a later date. See below for more details.
ACCOMPANY
Your spouse will be eligible or qualified to travel with you at the same time.
Once your spouse is traveling with you, all “Affidavit of Support” forms (I-864) must
NOTE:
include the name of your spouse.
FOLLOW-TO-JOIN
If you choose to have your spouse follow at a later date, after you arrive in the United States, you
must show that you are a Lawful Permanent Resident before your spouse can be issued a visa.
You may choose any of the following three options:
Submit a notarized copy of all pages of your passport (including the U.S entry stamp) to
1.
the U.S. Embassy, Georgetown, Guyana.
2.
Submit a notarized copy of both sides of your original “green card” (Alien Registration
Card) to the U.S. Embassy, Georgetown, Guyana.
You may go to the nearest office of the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services
3.
(formerly known as INS) and request that they send a “verification of status” cable to the
U.S. Embassy, Georgetown, Guyana. The cable must name your spouse and give his or
her address in Guyana. There is a fee for this cable.
Once we receive one of the three items above, along with the appropriate civil documents and a
local address, the Embassy will proceed with your follow-to-join request.
