EXAMPLE: Ms. Maria Gropa is currently Special Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Athens,

Greece. Prior to this she was a UNESCO Fellow with the Department of Social Anthropology, University

of Cambridge, where she conducted post‐doctoral research on the development of European Union co‐

operation and intercultural dialogue. Her previous professional experience includes Special Advisor to

the Mayor of Athens and Andersen Consulting (renamed as Accenture) in London, UK. Dr. Gropa also

worked as part of the project implementation of a European Union co‐funded development project in

Havana, Cuba from 2000 to 2001. Her forthcoming publications include: “Landscape, Revolution and

Property Regimes in Rural Havana” and “Mnemonic Landscape and the “Re‐Patriotisation” of

Revolutionary Ideology in Present‐Day Havana.” She completed her Ph.D. in Social Anthropology at

Cambridge University in 2004.

EXAMPLE: I was born and raised in Athens, the controversial capital of Greece. On the whole I am a

“city girl”, being used to noisy crowds, warm and polluted days, but also lively and joyful nights. I am a

big fun of art and when I was younger I wanted to become either a painter or a writer – the latter being

still my unfulfilled dream. Nonetheless, the last ten years, I have been occupied with less …urban but

equally inspiring activities, through my work at WWF Greece and recently the Hellenic Ornithological

Society too. I have a younger brother who is working as an architect and whose company I enjoy very

much despite his more “structured” viewpoint but also a number of very close friends who share my

artistic aspirations and existential agonies!
