A. Any request for Initial Plates must be accompanied by an unprocessed registration permit which is obtained from your
Town/City Clerk or Tax Collector.
B. Fee: Registration fee plus $40.00 Initial Plate fee, plus $4.00 reflectorized plate fee per plate ($8.00 for a set). There is an
additional charge of $30.00 for Conservation Plates. Make all checks payable to: State of NH- MV.
*Please Note: The initial plate fee for new registrations other than twelve (12) months is now prorated. Please see the chart
below to determine the appropriate fee.

D. All Initial Plate requests shall meet the following restrictions:
1. Letters only (at least two, and “O” cannot be one of the two)
2. A combination of at least two letters and numbers
3. A combination of at least two letters and symbols
4. A combination of at least two letters, symbol(s), and numbers
5. There can be no spaces
6. The only symbols available are: Dash (-), Ampersand (&), and Plus (+)
7. No two symbols can appear consecutively

The Division of Motor Vehicles reserves the right to recall Initial Plates if they are determined to be unacceptable or a
complaint is received from the public.
Pursuant to Administrative Rule Saf-C 514.61, the following guidelines should be read carefully before submitting your request:
1. Initial Plates shall not have the identical or similar combination of characters as any other classification of plate
2. Initial Plates shall not be capable of an obscene interpretation
3. Initial Plates shall not be ethnically, racially or which a reasonable person would find offensive to good taste
