The York Region District School Board believes that Literacy in the 21

Our ongoing quest to be fully literate members in the information age requires that we connect
literacy with current and future tools and that we encourage life-long learning and prepare our
students accordingly.

Wireless Access and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
Wireless access is available in all of our schools. Students are welcome to bring their own mobile
Internet devices to school to be used in the classroom only, for educational purposes, as per their
teachers’ instructions. Students will be responsible for the care and security of their personal
devices. The school WILL NOT be responsible for any damage, loss, or theft. Students must
also adhere to the Information Technology Acceptable Use Agreement as outlined in the GUIDE
TO THE 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS (pamphlet distributed
to students in September)
Web-based Technologies
Web-based technologies may be used in the classroom. Your child’s teacher will communicate a
list of which web-based technologies will be used as well as their applications.
Safety and Security
Discussions will take place in our classrooms throughout the year about how to use information
technology appropriately. These will include discussions on topics such as online safety and
privacy, critical assessment of media and web sites, cyber-bullying, and how to deal with
inappropriate/uncomfortable situations that may arise when online.
Digital Citizenship
Discussions will take place in our classrooms throughout the year about the impact(s) of digital
footprints (what students do when they are online), and how a positive attitude towards using
technology supports collaboration, learning and productivity.
