Clip Chart Behavior Plan
Discipline is teaching, not punishment.
-T. Berry Brazelton
In our classroom we practice a simple discipline strategy for promoting positive choices and
responsible behavior. The goal of this plan is to be fair, firm, and consistent to help assure that your child
receives hisher education in a pleasant, learner-friendly environment. It also encourages children to accept
the responsibility of their actions and allows them to control their own behavior choices, and if necessary
start making more positive choices at any given moment.
The following rules will be established in our classroom:
1. We keep ALL body parts and objects to ourselves.
2. We follow directions the first time they are given.
3. We use WALKING feet in the building at all times.
4. We raise our hands and wait to be called on before speaking.
5. We always try our best!
I have created a color coded “Clip Chart” as a visual aid that the children can see at all times, and I
have placed each child’s name on a clip and attached it to the chart. EACH DAY the children’s names begin on
the green “Ready to Learn” section of the chart. During the course of the day, the clothespins move up and
down the chart based upon the behavioral choices each student makes. Positive behavior (green choices)
causes the clothespin to move up. Conversely, inappropriate behavior (red choices) will cause the clothespin
to move down. Attached to this paper, you will see a visual example of what our clip chart looks like.
Please place this example in a safe place so you can refer to it throughout the year. It comes in handy when
your child is telling you the color they clipped up or down to so you can see what they’re talking about! 
The “Ready to Learn” level and the three levels above it reflect positive choices and finishing the day
on one of these levels will earn your child a sticker on the daily sticker chart located in their blue take home
reminders
folder. “Slow Down” and “Think About It” are
that better choices need to be made. Since every
case is unique, and not all students respond to the same consequence in the same way, the clip chart gives me
as the teacher the freedom to choose a consequence that both fits the offense and is meaningful to that
individual student. Examples of consequences may include but are not limited to: time out during recess or
Free Choice, loss of technology time or other favorite activity, or change of seat for a period of time.
“Contact Home” will be made via a note home, an email, or a phone call if the red level is reached. If your
child finishes the day on a level below “Ready to Learn,” you will see an “X” on their daily sticker chart and a
note detailing the behavior that needs improvement. Students will also receive rewards for establishing a
pattern of “clipping up” to the top levels of the chart.
Please review and discuss this plan with your child. At your earliest convenience, please sign and
return the form below. Thank you!!
