POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Request for Leave of Absence
Students in good standing may take a leave of absence for one or two semesters. Students returning from
a leave of absence are not required to file a readmission application and may register during the priority
period at the time selected by the Registrar for students on leave of absence. If the leave is for study at
another institution, students should receive college and departmental approval in advance for course work
they wish to transfer for credit toward a degree.
College approval for transfer credits is contingent upon students meeting specified minimum academic
requirements. For study elsewhere in the United States, students must be in academic good standing when
they begin their study away. For study abroad, students must have a 2.700 cumulative average when they
begin their study away and must have their program approved. Before students studying elsewhere may
return to the College, they must submit a transcript from the other institution showing all courses attempted
and a statement of continued good standing. Students who entered Tulane in the fall of 2006 or later must
complete the last 30 credits of course work toward a degree in residence in Newcomb-Tulane College.
Students who entered Tulane prior to the fall of 2006 and who remained under the curriculum in place when
they entered (the “old” curriculum), must complete the last 27 credits of course work toward a degree while
in residence. Additionally, a minimum of 60 credits must have been earned at Tulane in order to receive a
Tulane degree. Students taking a leave are advised that courses which they wish to take may not be available
to them during the semesters following their leave of absence. The deadline for application for a leave of
absence is the last day to register or add courses in the (first) semester of the leave.
Return the completed “Request for a Leave of Absence” to the Academic Advising Center for review.
1.
Requests for Leave of Absences may require additional documentation. The student is responsible for
meeting with their Newcomb-Tulane academic advisor to discuss any other necessary paperwork.
Approval for this leave is subject to the student meeting continuation standards at the close of the
semester before the leave begins.
2.
If you are now receiving financial aid, discuss with your counselor in the Financial Aid Office
your plans for a leave of absence.
3.
Inform the Housing Office of your leave of absence and complete any appropriate forms there
to retain your priority for on-campus housing.
