42. Further Description of Important Interior and Exterior Features (Continued on Reverse if Necessary)
The South Campus Overview is a raised plaza that occupies the north side of the South Quadrangle, a formal grouping of five dormitories
surrounding a rectangular open space plan. It features a brick retaining wall, curved at the front, with a pair of openings containing seven
steps leading down to the quadrangle. The surface of the plaza is both grass and flagstone. Low benches are set along the curved wall at
the plaza level. Flagstone walks lead to the center of the plaza, where the Tri-Delta Sundial forms a centerpiece. The bronze sundial is
described as an armillary because of its spherical construction. Six feet tall, it consists of six rings mounted on a three-foot marble
pedestal. The rings represent the six major circles of the earth - Meridian, Equator, North Polar or Arctic, South Polar or Antarctic, and
Equinoctical Colure - placed in proper relation to each other. The path of the sun is shown by the Eliptic. Signs of the Zodiac are
portrayed in high relief on the band of the Equator. The shaft, representing the axis of the Earth, points to the North Star; its shadow on
the belt of the Equator indicates the hour. Cast metal turtles at the base of the continued...
43. History and Significance (Continue on Reverse if necessary)
The South Quad Overview is shown on university maps of the post-WWII period, when the residential quad was in development. It appears
to have been an original part of plan for the women's quad. The armillary sundial was presented to Miami in 1962 as a gift from Delta Delta
Delta Sorority. It was presented to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Miami chapter. Set on true north, this
precision instrument was made for the exact spot on which it stands, and tells the exact solar time on April 16, June 14, September 2 and
December 25. It continues to serve as a centerpiece for the Overview.
44. Description of Environment and Outbuildings (See #52)
The overview and sundial are located at the north end of the South Quadrangle of Miami University. They form a transition between the
residential quad and the buildings fronting Spring Street to the north.
45. Sources of Information
Bronze plaque on site; 'Tri Delts present sundial to Miami,' The Miami Alumnus, October 1962; Central campus map, Building Program for
