North Scott Little League
Skills Assessment Process
The purpose of the North Scott Little League Skills Assessment (“assessment”) is to assess the skill
set of each little league player aged* 9–12 years old (and some 8 year olds who choose to
participate) in order to equally distribute the top 15-20% and lower 15-20% skill sets across the
little league teams.
The assessments are 90 minutes and include three stations: infield, hitting and pitching. There will
not be a specific station to view catching ability. When registering, players may be asked if they
have catching experience, or if they are interested in catching and this will be noted on their
assessment form.
Procedure:
 As players arrive at the assessment they will be registered and have a number marked on their
hand.
 After given their number players will be placed in numeric order in the player’s seating area in
the cafeteria. (Parents are not permitted to observe or participate in the assessment.)
 Prior to the assessment, players will have the ability to stretch and warm-up for 10 minutes.
 Players will be divided into three groups. All three groups will participate simultaneously in the
three stations (see below). The stations are facilitated by North Scott High School baseball
players.
 Two to three evaluators will be at each station to assess each player using a predetermined
scoring system (see Evaluation Form). The evaluators are North Scott High School baseball
staff, players, and current/former North Scott High School baseball assistants.
 After the individual assessments are complete, the North Scott Little League Information
Officer averages the points from the three evaluators and ranks players by little league age.
 At a later date, following coach selection, there will be a North Scott Little League Draft (see
North Scott Little League Draft Process).
Infield Station:
 Evaluators assess the player’s ability to field, throw and catch.
 Players will have ground balls rolled to them at the shortstop position.
 After fielding the ball, the player will throw to first base. The player on first base will throw to
home.
Hitting Station:
 Evaluators assess the player’s swing mechanics and ability to hit.
 Players will hit off a tee and do soft toss to warm up.
 Players will attempt to hit a front toss ball.
Pitching Station:
 Evaluators assess the player’s pitching mechanics and ability to pitch.
 Each player will throw five (5) consecutive pitches to a catcher.
 Evaluators will primarily focus on pitching mechanics, but will also consider velocity and
accuracy.
