x Note. Th is book will explore the standards that relate decimals to fractions, but not
standards focused solely on decimal computation. Th is is because the latter stan-
dards are really more about place value thinking than about fractional thinking.
IMPORTANT UNDERLYING IDEAS
x Diffi culties students experience with thousandths. My research (Small, 2005) indi-
cates that students have much more diffi culty with decimal thousandths than with
tenths or hundredths. Perhaps this is because there are so few instances in a child’s
life where decimal thousandths are seen. Th is is why it is important for students to
see a variety of models, so that at least one of the models makes sense to them for
visualizing what decimal thousandths actually are.
x Models for thousandths. One model that can support visualization of decimal
thousandths is the thousandths grid. It is based on the hundredths grid, but each of
the 100 cells is subdivided into 10 small rectangles, as two rows of fi ve rectangles.
