Digestion Flow Chart
Complete the Digestion flow chart using the following organs of digestion, the various
processes that occur in them, the nutrients that are digested, and state whether it is
chemical or mechanical digestion.
Organs:
Mouth
liver
Stomach
pancreas
small intestine
large intestine
esophagus
rectum
gall bladder
salivary glands
Processes:
1. Amylase (enzyme) breaks down starch into simpler sugar
2. Produces bile
3. Mucus allows food to slide down with peristalsis
4. Stores bile
5. HCL and pepsin start to break down protein into amino acids
6. Most digestion occurs here
7. Most absorption of nutrients occurs here
8. Absorption of water, vitamins and minerals
9. Produces enzymes for the digestion of fat, carbohydrates and protein
10. Waste material is compressed into solid form
11. Expulsion of solid waste occurs here.
12. Bile breaks apart fat into fatty acids here.
13. Enzymes digest fat, protein and carbohydrates here.
14. Villi absorb nutrient molecules into bloodstream for cells to use
15. Muscles churn to break apart nutrients and create a soupy mixture of mostly undigested
nutrients called chyme.
16. Teeth cut, grind and tear food.
Mechanical and Chemical Digestion
Write CD or MD next to the organ’s process to show where chemical and mechanical digestion
occurs.
Identify the Nutrients
Use a yellow highlighter to highlight nutrients that are ABSORBED into the bloodstream.
