POSITION TITLE:
Graphic Designer, Marketing and Communications
REPORTS TO:
Creative Director
PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Graphic Designer develops and executes compelling visual
presentations for use in college print and digital publications, including brochures, webpages,
invitations, event programs, direct mail pieces, and HTML-based email blasts. Adheres to
established graphic standards and brand guidelines and promotes best practices in higher
education marketing and communications.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
1. Primary job responsibility is to conceptualize, design, and produce a variety of print and
digital materials that reflect an advanced knowledge of design principles and aesthetics.
2. Work with campus clients to identify project parameters, including objectives, target
audience, budget, and timeline. Advise on the proper use of college logos, colors, and
graphics and promote visual brand consistency across design pieces.
3. Using original design concepts or established design templates, engage in all technical
aspects of production, including laying out copy and images in InDesign software, preparing
graphics in Illustrator, and conducting photo selection and manipulation employing
Photoshop.
4. Complete and review final product and prepare for printing or online posting. Review proofs,
identify corrections or revisions, and obtain client approvals. Work closely with vendors on
printing specifications to ensure quality control.
5. Coordinate and troubleshoot as necessary the use of design templates for the St. Olaf website
and provide assistance to web authors and departments in updating and selecting photos and
other visuals for digital presentation. Provide brand training for web authors and guidance on
the proper use of web templates.
6. Prepare email design templates and work with campus offices to facilitate dissemination
through various email client software.
7. Conduct image research, coordinate and direct photo shoots, and maintain the department’s
image database.
8. Manage the Basecamp job production software/workflow management system.
9. Monitor evolving print and digital design trends and their use in higher education marketing.
10. Engage in special projects and perform other related duties as directed.
