Daily Eating Log Template
1. Log your daily eating. Every time you eat anything, note in a journal what you ate, how
much you ate, and how you were feeling – relaxed, stressed, busy, and so on.
2. Also log the time you ate. I’ve included a sample log below that you can use if you wish.
3. At the end of the week, summarize the Log: What have you learned about your eating?
Determine when and how you eat emotionally.
4. Then, create a back-up plan consisting of healthy and supportive alternatives. These
alternatives should have one of two qualities: either they give you pleasure (without
hurting you) or they provide a sense of mastery.
5. For E.g., you might have seeds and nuts on hand, carrots and celery sticks, tea, healthy
snacks or smoothies; or you might decide to pay a bill, clean the bathroom, knit, draw,
go for a walk, stretch, or meditate.
This exercise is designed for you to simply become aware of your eating habits and issues that
may be otherwise unnoticed by you. Please do not change anything, or try to “improve”
anything this week. If you do, you lose the opportunity to gain awareness of what is true for
you.
Awareness is always the first step in any change. Without it, you won’t know what to change.
So, give yourself the gift of awareness by simply being a passive observer and recorder.
Below is a sample log page. Feel free to make as many copies as you need to record your daily
eating activities.
