Inquiry Lab: Introduction to Measurement
Paper Airplane Lab
In this lab you will practice measurement and decide which type of airplane travels the farthest distance.
To do this we will be making a paper airplane from printer paper and throwing it down a hallway. We
will then measure the distance the plane flew and compare weighted planes with non-weighted.
Question/Problem
When folded exactly the same way, does weight effect the distance in which a paper plane flies?
Research
Paper airplanes were arguably invented in ancient China nearly 2500 years ago, when the art of folding
paper to create things, origami was invented. Since that time paper models of gliders and airplanes have
been used by greats such as Leonardo Da Vinci (late 1400’s) and the Wright brothers, the first to achieve
flight. The Wright brothers made paper models of their aircraft before they successfully made their first
flight in 1903. Since then paper airplanes have become more sophisticated, often resulting in improved
performance and aerobatic capabilities.

Materials:
one sheet of printer paper with plane design, large and small paper clips, meter sticks
1. A partner will be needed for this lab.
2. Each pair will be responsible for folding one plane from the printer paper pattern. Every group
will make the same style of airplane. Follow the pattern on the printed paper.
