Purpose of Using Strategy:
This strategy encourages student to identify the relationships between vocabulary
words, ideas, and concepts. Students create a list of nine important vocabulary
words, ideas, and concepts. The students create sentences which develop a
paragraph to show a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of the
vocabulary words, ideas and concepts.
(see Attachment 1)
VI.
Steps:
1. Each student takes a piece of paper and folds it into nine sections (3x3).
2. Teacher models using the 3 x 3 vocabulary paper to write words from the
lesson in each of the nine squares (see Attachment 2 for blackline master).
3. Students determine nine words that are important from the lesson.
4. Students write one word in each of the nine sections on the 3 x 3 paper.
5. Students write a sentence which illustrates their deep understanding of three
words in a row, column or diagonal.
6. Students choose another row, column or diagonal to create another sentence
connecting with the thought from the previous sentence.
7. Continue this process until a paragraph summary is created.
8. Using Timed Pair Share, students will share paragraphs. Partner A will share
their paragraph for 30 seconds. Partner B will share their paragraph for 30
seconds.
VII. Tips:
For a tactile experience, the teacher provides students with an 8 ½ by 11 sheet of
colored paper instead of the attached blackline master. Students will then fold
the paper diagonally and tear off the excess paper at the bottom to create a
perfect 8 ½ x 8 ½ square. Fold perfect square to into 3 x 3.
