Be an Investigator

You are going to hold a jumping contest and then write a report for the

newspaper with a bar graph that gives the results. You are also going to

report the mean of the distance of the jumps.

Directions:

1. Put a piece of masking tape on the ﬂoor.

2. A student stands with the toes of both feet at the edge of the tape. Then, with

both feet together, the student jumps as far as he or she can.

3. Other students cut a piece of adding-machine tape that is the same length as

the jump (measure from the starting tape to the heels of the feet) and write the

student’s name on the tape.

4. When the jumps are completed, measure the length of each piece of

adding-machine tape in inches and write the length on the tape.

5. Make a bar graph to show the results.

6. Find the mean of the distance of the jumps by cutting the adding-machine

tapes and piecing them together until you have the same number of tapes as

the number of students in your group, and all the tapes are all the same

length. Measure one of these tapes. This tells you the mean (average)

distance of the jumps of your group. Write the newspaper article.
