Catching Fruit Flies
ACTIVITY SHEET
1
Get a jar, a slice of banana, and a
large piece of paper.
2
Cut the paper into a circle that is
16 inches across. Then shape the
circle into a cone. Tape or staple
the edge. Make a tiny hole at the
bottom of the cone.
3
Put the banana slice in the jar. Rest
the cone on top of the jar so the
pointed end is down into the jar.
4
Put the jar outside. Wait a few days.
Adult fruit flies will be trapped
inside the jar. They will lay eggs on
the banana.
5
Check to see if the eggs hatch. Then
watch for larvae and pupae. Write
down what you see.
6
Remove the cone and let the fruit
flies go. Share your observations
with the class.
