Summer Reading Challenge Page 5

Dear Student,
Wow, I can hardly believe how quickly this school year has come and gone! However, as quick as it
might have seemed, we actually spent a great deal of time reading together in the classroom, and I
am so proud of how you have grown as a reader this year.
As you already know, the best way to improve your reading level, while becoming a stronger
reader, is to read just right books every day. This isn’t so hard to do during the school year since we
read every day at school, but this can become a big challenge over the summer when we are no
longer in school.
In class we have talked about the importance of reading throughout the summer so that your
reading level does not drop before next school year. Therefore, my goal for you over the summer is
to read every day, just like you do now during the school day, and maintain your current reading level
or even increase it. This will be sure to set you up for a successful school year in the fall.
In order to help promote summer reading, I have created a simple reading program for you to
take part in over the summer. Please read over the directions at the bottom of this letter, and let
me know if you have any questions! Good luck and happy reading!
Sincerely,
Directions:
1.
Complete the “Summer Reading Contract” in school.
2.
Show your parent the parent letter.
3.
Keep a record of all books you read on the “Completed Book List” form.
4.
Read 20 minutes every day and record your daily reading on the monthly calendars. For
each day include the book title, pages you read, and a parent initial.
5.
Complete three book reviews using the “Book Review” form.
6.
Create an advertisement for one fiction book. In your advertisement, you must include the
following: summary, description of characters, theme, problem, solution, information about
the author, and your personal rating of the book. You may choose how you want to display
your advertisement by creating a foldable, poster, PowerPoint, website, or anything else of
your choosing!
7.
Return the completed assignments to me at the start of next school year for a reward!
