Chapter 4 4
What We’re Learning
During the next few weeks, our math class will be learning about
and practicing multiplication of whole numbers.
You can expect to see work that provides practice with multiplying
numbers by 1-digit factors as well as by 2-digit factors.
As we learn how to multiply whole numbers and check the exact
answer using estimation, you may wish to use this sample as
a guide.
Guiding Your Child
Estimating to Check Multiplication
An estimate is a way to check an exact answer. An estimate can be compared to an exact
answer to help decide if that answer is reasonable.
First, multiply.
Then, estimate by rounding each
factor to the greatest place value.

Since 3,000 is close to the exact product, 3,471 is a reasonable answer. If an estimate is
not close to the exact answer, the problem should be redone.
During this chapter, students should continue to memorize the
basic multiplication facts.

Your Child’s Teacher
